Chapter 6: Motivation and Boredom

This chapter has a lot of information crammed into one chapter. Although it does emphasis on key ways to motivate the students, I find that it can also be a little confusing and repetitive. Students love to go to school because it gives them a sense of accomplishment when they get things done. They are there to be more social and broaden their social sphere. Being packed into an atmosphere where one needs to communicate with both teachers and students helps the student develop the communication skills needed for their future. Having an understanding teacher in the school that motivates and gives their students challenges gives the student something to look forward to come to everyday. Students are also in the schools to learn some of the basic life questions. Some may not even know what the question is that they want to know, but they are still curious about it. I found that the chart on page 112 will help me plan out my class to class activities. This chart expressed what would work and what doesn't. If it is a beautiful day outside, have the students learn outside. When it is the first week of school and kids are just getting into the flow of things, don't overload them with too much information and homework. You as a teacher will also need time to catch up to the new school year. To finish the chapter up, homework is not always needed. There is a time and a place when homework works and the chart in the books helped me understand that it is there for a tool and should not be overused. Open up your mind to other techniques for gathering knowledge.
